Claude, Anthropic's AI assistant: 2026 plan pricing, Projects, artifacts and Claude Code. What a non-developer can actually build, and the limits.

Claude is Anthropic's AI assistant, and a non-developer can use it to produce documents, internal tools and even a website, as long as they go beyond plain chat. Used as a souped-up search engine, Claude delivers about 10% of what it can do. I train small and mid-sized businesses on Claude Code, and the difference between the people who save time and the ones who give up after a week almost always comes down to how far up the usage ladder they climb, not the tool. Here's the path I recommend, from the free chat all the way to what you can build in an afternoon.

  • 💡 Usage level: chat on its own hits a ceiling fast. Projects and Claude Code are what make the difference.
  • 📊 2026 pricing: free to try, $17 to $20 a month for serious work.
  • ⚠️ Real limits: message caps every 5 hours, and privacy you need to keep an eye on.
  • 🚀 My clear verdict: start with a Project, move to Claude Code when you want to build.

What is Claude and how much does it cost in 2026?

Claude is a family of large language models developed by Anthropic, as well as the conversational assistant built on them. According to the pricing page on claude.com, checked in October 2026, the Free plan costs $0 and the Pro plan $20 a month ($17 a month on the $200 annual plan, billed upfront).

On the model side, Wikipedia lists four stable versions in 2026: Claude Fable 5.1 (September 1), Claude Opus 5.5 (September 22), Claude Sonnet 5.5 (September 28) and Claude Haiku 5.5 (October 7). Haiku is the lightest and Opus the most powerful of the three original sizes. Claude Mythos, which is more capable still, has only been opened up to a handful of organisations for cybersecurity work.

Which plan should you start with?

For a business owner who's testing the waters, the Free plan is enough for a week: it already includes memory across conversations, artifacts and web search. As soon as you want Projects and Claude Code, you need Pro. The table below sums up the four individual plans.

Plan Price per month What it unlocks Who it's for
Free $0 Chat, artifacts, memory, limited usage Testing on a simple use case
Pro $17 to $20 Projects, Claude Code, Claude in Chrome A business owner or employee, day to day
Max $100 5x Pro usage, $100 in API credits Heavy use all day long
Ultra $200 10x Pro usage per week Very long-running tasks

For a team, the logic changes: I've broken down the tipping point in From Claude Pro to Claude Team. My firm view: Pro is enough for 90% of business owners, and Max only makes sense if you hit the cap every single day.

Why chat alone isn't enough

Claude's chat answers a question without knowing anything about your business, your customers or your documents. Dan Martell, who says in his video that he's spent more than 1,000 hours on Claude, describes this first level as "a sophisticated version of Google": one question, one answer, then you close the tab. That's exactly what I see with business owners who say "AI doesn't do anything for me."

An assistant with no context produces generic answers. The problem is how it's used, not the model.

How do you get a better answer starting today?

Dan Martell suggests two free habits. The first: ask Claude to interview you before it answers, with a line like "Before you answer, ask me every question you need to do this task properly." The second: tell it "Check your work," which pushes it to correct its own mistakes. I use both, and the second one regularly fixes figures that the first draft had fudged.

Then there's the question of usage caps. On r/ChatGPT, one user explains that they went back to ChatGPT Plus after four months on Claude: the $20 plan gave them "usage anxiety," with a five-hour limit they hit quickly. It's an honest account and worth taking seriously: if your work is lots of short pieces of text, ChatGPT may be the better choice. But my position stands: richer prompts, sent less often, use up less of your quota than ten vague back-and-forths.

Claude Projects: the memory that changes day-to-day work

A Claude Project is a workspace that keeps instructions and files from one conversation to the next. Instead of re-explaining who you are every session, you do it once and Claude remembers. This is the level Dan Martell calls "regular user," and it's where the people I train start seeing their first measurable time savings.

How do you set up a useful Project in three steps?

Dan Martell's method comes down to three moves, which I've adopted in my training sessions:

  1. Create a Project named after a role, for example "marketing."
  2. Ask Claude to interview you so it can write a "master prompt": a file describing how you work, with which tools and for whom.
  3. Add that file to the Project, then drop in your examples, your data and your existing processes.

The result: every conversation starts with your context already loaded. Dan Martell says he uses one Project per content channel, with his brand guidelines and his preferred scripts. For a small business, the equivalent is a "quotes" Project, a "customer follow-ups" Project, a "meeting minutes" Project.

The value doesn't come from the model, it comes from the context you give it. That's why I advise against paying for a pricier plan before you've set up two or three solid Projects.

Artifacts and Claude Code: what you can actually build

An artifact is a document, a page or a small app that Claude creates alongside the conversation instead of pasting it into the text. According to Wikipedia, the feature has been around since June 2024. In his beginner's tutorial, Kevin Stratvert shows that you can generate several kinds: documents and templates, websites and apps, games. On iPad, artifacts now open in a separate column while Claude keeps writing them, as the official Claude channel shows in its video on the mobile updates.

Claude Code goes further. The Claude channel defines it as an agentic tool that reads your code, edits files, runs commands and connects to your tools, in the terminal, VS Code, JetBrains, the desktop app or the web. Unlike chat, it has direct access to your files. By default, it asks for permission before running a command, and the video warns that it can get things wrong or overcomplicate a solution.

When should you move from chat to Claude Code?

Move to Claude Code when the deliverable is a set of files (a website, a script, an internal tool) rather than a piece of text. If you want to see what that looks like without writing a single line of code, I've documented three cases end to end: a Pokémon game with AI-generated assets, cloning a website in five steps and the complete tutorial in French. For complete beginners, How to use Claude Code without knowing how to code covers the basics.

The numbers from my own site confirm where the demand is. On ai-first.fr, according to my Search Console data over 30 days (updated September 14, 2026), the French-language Claude Code tutorial got 34 clicks from 2,734 impressions, and the query "tuto claude code" ranks at position 8.0. These are small volumes, but they show that readers want to do things, not read model news.

My verdict: where Claude stops and where to start

Yes, a non-developer can build useful tools with Claude, as long as they move up one level at a time: chat, then Projects, then Claude Code. Each level should produce a measurable result before you move to the next, otherwise you just pile up demos with no real value.

Three limits deserve a hard look. First, usage caps, as the r/ChatGPT account reminds us. Second, privacy: a thread on r/technology reports on a Florida woman whose "diary" entry in Claude was allegedly reported to the police by Anthropic. I couldn't verify the details, but the lesson is simple: never put sensitive customer data in it without reading the terms first. Finally, agent security, which I covered in Claude and prompt injection.

Human oversight is non-negotiable: review, test and sign off before you send anything to a client.

My plan for your first afternoon: open the Free plan, list three repetitive tasks that eat up your time, then set up a Project for the most painful one. If the time savings are real after a week, upgrade to Pro. To map out what's worth automating in your business, the French government portal Francenum offers digitalisation resources for small and mid-sized businesses.

Frequently asked questions

Is Claude free?

Yes, the Free plan costs $0 and includes chat, artifacts, memory across conversations and web search, with usage limited every 5 hours and every week, according to claude.com in October 2026. Projects and Claude Code require the Pro plan at $20 a month ($17 on the annual plan).

What's the difference between Claude and Claude Code?

Claude is the chat assistant, which works on whatever you type or upload. Claude Code is an agent that has direct access to your files and your terminal so it can read, edit and run things. It's the right fit when the expected output is a set of files rather than a piece of text.

Do you need to know how to code to use Claude Code?

Not to get started, but you do need to be able to review and test what it produces. Claude Code asks for permission before acting and can make mistakes, as the official Claude channel's video points out. A non-developer gets good results on a brochure website or a small tool, less so on a critical system.

Does Claude work in French?

Yes. The App Store lists French plus 33 other languages for the app, with a rating of 4.7 from 44,000 reviews. Claude also answers in French on the web and in voice mode, and the Claude channel notes that the menus and settings are now translated into 24 languages.

Claude or ChatGPT: which one for a small business?

For work that involves documents and working files, I prefer Claude with Projects. For lots of short messages, ChatGPT Plus may be a better fit, as one r/ChatGPT user found after running into Claude's caps. The safest bet is to test both on the same real task for a week.
