Meta's multi-app agent: can it automate your small business?

Meta Muse and Meta Business Agent both work across several apps. Which one actually automates small business work, what does it cost, and where does the promise fall short?

Meta Business Agent is free in WhatsApp Business, Muse is US-only. What each agent automates, what it costs and what it misses for a small business.

A Meta multi-app agent is a Meta AI that takes action across several apps (WhatsApp, Instagram, Messenger, your calendar) instead of staying inside a chat window. For a small business, only one of Meta's two agents matters today: Meta Business Agent. It's free in WhatsApp Business and it can answer your customers. Meta Muse, the personal agent everyone is talking about, isn't built for your business, and I'll show you why with the numbers.

  • ✅ Business Agent is useful: free in WhatsApp Business, it answers customers and hands off to a person when it's stuck.
  • 🌍 Muse is out of reach: a personal agent launched in the US, adults only, designed for consumers.
  • ⚠️ Closed ecosystem: the agent lives in WhatsApp, Instagram and Messenger, not in your CRM.
  • 🎯 The verdict: test Business Agent on one specific use case, and leave Muse aside for now.

I went through four videos, three pages that rank for this topic and several Reddit threads to separate what actually automates work from what just looks good in a demo. The two agents share a brand name, but they don't solve the same problem. That's the first thing to clear up.

What is a Meta multi-app agent, in practice?

Meta launched two separate agents in 2026. Meta Muse is a personal agent for consumers. Meta Business Agent is for businesses that answer their customers on Meta's messaging apps. What they share is the ability to take action, not just reply.

What's the difference between Muse and Meta Business Agent?

According to eigent.ai, Muse is an agent that "doesn't just answer questions": it opens a browser, fills in forms, negotiates a bill and pays with your card, asking for approval on sensitive actions. It's announced for people aged 18 and over, in the US, on iOS, Android and the web.

Meta Business Agent launched worldwide on June 3, 2026. According to theaiagentindex.com, more than a million businesses were using it at launch, across more than a billion active business conversations a day. It answers questions, recommends products and books appointments using the business's catalogue, website and opening hours.

Why doesn't "multi-app" mean "connected to everything"?

"Multi-app" is misleading. For Business Agent, it means Meta's own apps: WhatsApp Business, Instagram Pro, Messenger and Meta Business Suite. Google Calendar and Google Drive can be connected, but not your CRM, not your ERP, not your invoicing tool.

This is where my experience in the field clashes with Meta's pitch. AI is valuable when it reads, decides, acts and reports back inside the tools a business actually runs on. An agent that lives in a messaging app handles the conversation, not the back office.

Meta Business Agent: the automation that actually matters to a small business

Meta Business Agent is an AI agent built into the WhatsApp Business app that answers customers around the clock, using your business information. It's the only one of Meta's two agents that a small business owner in Europe can switch on today, and it's a genuine time-saver for incoming messages.

What can the agent do in WhatsApp Business?

Creator Moises De La Rosa, who tested it, sums it up like this: it replies on its own at any hour, learns from your files, products, photos and instructions, connects to your WhatsApp Business catalogue, and hands off to a human when it doesn't know the answer. According to theaiagentindex.com, it also sends a morning summary of conversations missed overnight, plus a list of threads that need a person.

The agent can either reply to customers directly or learn from your own replies before it goes live. That second option is exactly what I recommend in my training sessions: start small, with one clear use case and a human in the loop.

An automated reply is only worth something if the handoff to a human is reliable.

How much does Meta Business Agent cost?

Moises De La Rosa's video describes the agent as free in the app. Yet theaiagentindex.com says usage through the Business Platform has been billed at $2.00 per million tokens since August 1, 2026. The two don't necessarily contradict each other: one is talking about the app, the other about the platform and the API.

To give you a sense of scale, here's a back-of-the-envelope estimate, not a measurement: 10,000 conversations of 2,000 tokens each come to 20 million tokens, or $40 at the platform rate. Cost isn't the issue. The real risk is an agent getting a price or a lead time wrong in front of a customer.

Two technical limits worth knowing: Google Calendar and Google Drive can only be connected from the WhatsApp Business mobile app (not WhatsApp Web), and Drive syncing can take up to 12 hours. If you change your prices in the morning, the agent may keep quoting the old ones until evening.

Meta Muse: an impressive personal agent, but not for your business

Meta Muse is a personal AI agent that remembers things between sessions, accesses your accounts (Gmail, calendar) and carries out everyday tasks. The demos are compelling, but the tool is designed for an individual in the US, not for a team.

What does Muse do that ChatGPT doesn't?

In their video, the tabGeeks channel describes the difference this way: a chatbot forgets everything between conversations, while Muse keeps the context and can act on it. Their demo starts with an inbox of 10,000 unread emails to clean up after granting Gmail access. Edwin Chen shows purchases on Amazon or Walmart, booking cinema tickets, a personalised news feed and a goals tab.

Alex Finn, who compares it with Hermès, OpenClaw and Claude Cowork, calls it a single-thread agent: one big conversation, where other tools line up several named agents. His verdict is nuanced: excellent if you want to say "book me a Greek restaurant", less suited to people orchestrating lots of different tasks. What he likes most is the activity log, which shows everything the agent did at the end of the day.

Why isn't Muse a fit for a European small business?

Three factual reasons. First, Edwin Chen points out that Muse is only available in the US, and you need a VPN anywhere else. Second, the agent is restricted to people aged 18 and over and focused on personal life: shopping, travel, bills, health goals.

Third, there's the question of control. Giving an agent access to an entire inbox and a bank card is a personal choice. In a business, it raises issues of confidentiality, access rights and liability, and the EU AI Act already imposes transparency obligations when an AI interacts with people (see the European Commission's page on the regulatory framework for AI).

I wasn't able to test Muse myself, since there's no access outside the US, and I'd rather say so than dress up a demo. A tool you can't legally roll out to your teams isn't a business tool.

Where does Meta's automation stop, and what do you do with the rest?

Meta's automation stops at the edge of its own ecosystem. Business Agent handles customer conversations, Muse handles personal life, and neither of them reads your CRM, reconciles your invoices or updates your customer database. For that, you need an agent plugged into your own tools.

Should you move to Muse Glimmer or Meta's MCP server?

Meta has also released building blocks for developers. Muse Glimmer, released on August 10, 2026 according to a test posted on r/better_claw, is a 30-billion-parameter dense model under the Apache 2.0 licence, with a 131,072-token context window, that runs on a 24 GB GPU or an M4/M5 Max Mac with 4-bit quantisation. It's designed for local agents: tool calling, recovery after failure, image reading.

Meta has also launched an MCP server that lets an agent (Claude, Cursor, ChatGPT) handle the technical setup of WhatsApp Business: number verification, Cloud API access, message templates. For a small business with no developer, this isn't where to start. For a technical team, it's the gateway to agents that work with your own systems.

Meta tool Who it's for Stated cost Main limitation
Meta Business Agent Small businesses receiving customer messages Free in the app, $2 per million tokens via the platform Stays within Meta's ecosystem
Meta Muse Adults in the US Not specified in the sources Unavailable outside the US, personal use
Muse Glimmer Developers, local agents Free weights (Apache 2.0), 24 GB hardware Requires technical skills

One detail to keep a level head: Meta's benchmarks, such as Gaia2 (800 scenarios across 10 universes, with simulated email, calendar and messaging apps, according to the Meta Agents Research Environments page), test agents in simulated worlds. Your real inbox is messier than any test scenario.

My verdict: test Business Agent, keep everything else elsewhere

Should you let a Meta multi-app agent automate your small business? Yes for answering customers on WhatsApp, no for everything else. The right test focuses on a single use case: repetitive questions about opening hours, prices and appointments.

What can you do this week?

Start by measuring how many of your incoming messages look alike. Then switch on Business Agent in "learn from my replies" mode, review the conversations for two weeks, and only then turn on automatic replies. It's the same principle as in my article on AI agent automation for small businesses: delegate what's repetitive, keep control of anything that affects your margin.

If your needs go beyond messaging, for example linking your emails, your CRM and your documents, an agent connected to your tools will serve you better than a messaging agent. That's what I describe in autonomous AI agents, and the comparison between OpenClaw and Claude Code shows what these open agents can do. If your team needs technical support, the GoLive Software team builds exactly this kind of integration.

My take fits in one sentence: a useful agent that handles one type of message well beats a spectacular demo you can't deploy. Business Agent is the useful agent. Muse is the demo.

Frequently asked questions

Is Meta Muse available in Europe?

No, not officially. According to the videos and pages I reviewed, Muse has launched in the US, for people aged 18 and over, on iOS, Android and the web. Users outside the US have to go through a VPN to access it, which isn't a serious option for a business.

Is Meta Business Agent really free?

The agent built into the WhatsApp Business app is presented as free. However, according to theaiagentindex.com, usage through the Business Platform has been billed at $2.00 per million tokens since August 1, 2026. Check in your Meta account which mode applies before rolling it out at scale.

Can Meta Business Agent connect to my CRM?

Not directly. Its integrations cover WhatsApp Business, Instagram Pro, Messenger and Meta Business Suite, plus Google Calendar and Google Drive. The theaiagentindex.com listing states that it isn't MCP-compatible, which limits connections to third-party tools.

What's the difference between Meta Muse and Muse Glimmer?

Muse is a personal agent app, powered by the Muse Spark model according to a Reddit post. Muse Glimmer is an open 30-billion-parameter model distilled from Muse Spark, which developers run locally under the Apache 2.0 licence. You use the first one. You deploy the second.

Can a messaging agent replace a customer service employee?

It replaces repetitive answers, not judgement. Business Agent passes the conversations it can't handle to a human, and that handoff is what determines the quality of your service. Track the human handoff rate for two weeks before cutting anything.
