Anthropic paused its free Claude for startups offer (1 year of Team, $1,000 in API credits) three days after launch. Eligibility, how to apply and our verdict.

Anthropic's free Claude offer for startups, a year of Claude Team plus $1,000 in API credits, has been paused for new grants since October 9, 2026, three days after it launched. Applications are still open, but they are being re-reviewed and a decision can take up to a week. Here's what the offer included, why it was pulled, how to apply anyway, and what I would do if I ran a small business.

  • 🎁 A generous offer: one year of Claude Team (5 seats), $1,000 in API credits, and up to $45,000 in partner discounts.
  • ⏸️ Grants paused: Anthropic was overwhelmed by a flood of applications and paused grants on October 9, 2026.
  • 🎯 You can still apply: decisions now take about a week, and applications that were already approved are being re-checked.
  • 💡 My verdict: take free credits if they come, but never build them into your budget.

What the Claude for Startups offer of October 6, 2026 included

Claude for Startups is Anthropic's programme that gives young companies a free year of Claude Team, API credits and discounts from partner software vendors. It launched in May and was expanded on October 6, 2026 during SF Tech Week, according to blogdumoderateur.com.

What is it actually worth to a startup?

On paper, it's a solid package. Claude Team covers up to five Premium seats with access to Opus, Sonnet and Haiku, plus Fable up to 50% of the weekly quota. The $1,000 in API credits comes as a one-off grant, with higher rate limits.

A Reddit post on r/indianstartups points out that Claude Team normally costs $30 per seat per month. By my maths, five seats over twelve months comes to $1,800 of free subscription, or $2,800 once you add the API credits. For a team of three developers, that's a full year without a Claude bill.

Benefit Advertised value Requirement Status as of Oct 13, 2026

The Claude Startup Stack bundles offers from ElevenLabs, Gamma, Granola, Hex and Linear. The advertised $45,000 is a combined ceiling on discounts, not a cheque: each offer has to be claimed separately from the console.

Why Anthropic paused the offer three days after launch

Anthropic pulled the free year of Claude Team and the $1,000 in credits because applications far exceeded its forecasts and the eligibility filter was letting in companies that weren't startups. The company admitted as much to the people who had signed up.

What exactly happened?

According to Forbes, Sarah Wolfe, startup marketing lead at Anthropic, explained on X that the acceptance criteria had not been configured correctly. The programme received 21 times more applications in 48 hours than in the previous five months, which Anthropic had not anticipated. She acknowledged that too many people had been let in.

On the user side, next.ink reports that people were approved very quickly without being founders. On Reddit, one comment quoted by Forbes described the verification process as "non-existent". Another put it bluntly: "free lunch is over".

"The free credits and seats reached maximum capacity much faster than expected."

Who keeps their benefits, and who loses them?

Accounts that had already activated the offer keep it, according to a summary posted on r/actutech. Approved applicants who hadn't yet claimed their benefits are being re-checked and may be turned down. Partner offers and office hours remain active.

On the ground, it's messy. On r/ClaudeAI, a founder approved on October 7 found that the ElevenLabs and Linear codes worked, but there was no button for the $1,000 or the Team seats, and their emails to the programme team bounced. Another founder, on r/claude, was rejected despite having a business email and an up-to-date website.

This uncertainty is the real cost of the free offer. Anyone who had planned to move their team onto Claude Team on the strength of the promise is now left without a plan B.

How to apply despite the pause

Applications still go through claude.com/programs/startups. Anthropic now says it aims to decide within a week, rather than the 72 hours originally advertised, according to a recap posted on r/Anthropic on October 8. So it's worth applying, as long as you don't count on anything this month.

What are the eligibility requirements?

The programme is aimed at companies founded within the last five years or funded within the last two years, according to briefia.fr. You need a Claude Console account, an email address whose domain matches your website, and a short description of your project. You don't need to have raised funding: Sumit Paul's video confirms this.

How should you fill in the form to reduce the risk of rejection?

Sumit Paul's video walks through an application completed in under three minutes. His advice boils down to four points:

  • Use an address on your company domain (forwarding to Gmail is fine).
  • Choose "organisation", not "individual", when creating the account.
  • Ignore the prompts to buy credits or invite colleagues.
  • Be specific in the two text fields: generic answers get generic results.

Anthropic's magic link can end up in your spam folder. Zero Degree Coder received his $1,000 within 24 to 48 hours before the pause, using ChatGPT to help write his answers. I'd advise against that approach: with re-checks under way, a generic application is the first to be cut.

My verdict: should you count on free Claude for startups?

No, don't build this offer into your budget. Free credits are something you take if they come, not something you plan around. In three days, Anthropic showed that the programme can be withdrawn, restricted or re-checked without notice, including for accounts that were already approved.

What should a small business do instead?

With the small business owners I work with, the right question is never "how many free credits can I get?" but "where is my team losing time?". A clear use case you can measure within two weeks justifies a few tens of euros a month, no promotion required. To work out at what volume you should move from an individual subscription to a team plan, read From Claude Pro to Claude Team: the volume at which a small business should switch.

If you're torn between providers, Mistral or Claude for your small business in 2026 compares pricing, GDPR and quality. And to understand the capacity pressure behind this kind of U-turn, Anthropic: 80x growth nobody saw coming gives the background. For French government support for small business digitisation, the francenum.gouv.fr portal remains more reliable than any promotion.

If you genuinely are a startup under five years old, apply anyway: it costs you three minutes, and the office hours and partner discounts are already live. Just plan your AI budget as if the offer didn't exist.

Companies founded in the last five years or that have raised funding in the last two years. You need a Claude Console account, a business email address matching your website's domain, and a project description. Having raised funding is not required.

It depends. According to a summary shared on Reddit, those who have already activated the free year and credits keep them. Those who were approved but hadn't claimed their benefits are being re-checked and may be turned down, according to Forbes.

How much is a free year of Claude Team worth?

At $30 per seat per month, the price cited on Reddit, five seats come to around $1,800 over a year. Add the $1,000 in API credits and the total is close to $2,800. Check this price on Anthropic's official pricing page before running your own numbers.

How long does it take to get a decision?

The programme page now says decisions take up to a week. The form originally said 72 hours. Anthropic doesn't always confirm by email, so check the programme portal in the console as well.
